The Ultimate Parisian Icon

Today was the seven hour marathon tour of Paris.  It was raining lightly this morning which kept us from getting a good picture of the Arch de Triumph or the Louvre Museum.  From there we traveled to Notre Dame Cathedral (unfortunately the Hunchback was on holiday in the south of France).  We had time for lunch so we ducked into a small crepe restaurant where Anna and John shared a ham and cheese crepe, and Alice and I shared a Grand Mariner crepe.  Yum.   It was then back to the bus when we went to the Eiffel Tower; I wanted to walk the stairs to the top but Alice talked me out of it.  Then it was back to the boat for the Captain's welcome reception followed by a dinner including a shrimp and avocado appetizer, veal fillet mignon, and a variety of desserts including a berry torte, a lemon souffle and mango sorbet. Oh yeah, and our wine glasses were never allowed to empty.  After dinner we went up on the sun deck to watch us sail through one of the many locks.  Then it was down to the lounge for basic French lessons before it was time to go to bed.  With that I wish you bonne nuit.

Saturday Market in Vienne

Holy frijoles, you have never seen a farmers market until you have experienced the one in Vienne.  I swear that it stretches on for over a mile through all the streets on the city down both sides and through the squares.  There are literally dozens of cheese stands, dozens of butchers, and what seemed like a hundred vegetable stands.  Stands are 20 to 40+ feet wide, many were trailers, and also include clothing, jewelry, and even dollar store items. John stopped at one stand to purchase a pocket sandwich filled with chicken, vegetables and sauces.  He paid his 3 euros for it and then as he walked away he went back to take a couple paper towels off the roll on the corner of the counter.  One of the workers immediately challenged him and put out his hand as though he wanted to be paid for them.  When John reached out his hand with some coins the workers burst out laughing --- it was a great prank. Assailing the Chateau Gillard Fortress in Les Andelys

Going through the locks on the Seine and talking to pedestrians on bridge Towns along the Seine Towns along the Seine Chateau Gaillard, a fortess of King Richard the I in the 12th Century Our ship viewed from Chateau Gaillard Proximity of our Boat to Les Andelys Another leisurely day.  We pulled away from our mooring in Rouen at 7 am and began our trip to Les Andelys, a town of 400 on the Seine.  We sailed by several picturesque small towns and went through a lock that raised us about 30 feet.  While in the locks we were able to talk with people on the pedestrian bridge over the top (of course they talked French and we talked English so the interchange was limited).  After lunch we arrived in Les Andelys. Les Andelys is a town of about 400 residents.  This town was not touched by the war except for the French resistance intentionally destroying the bridge to keep German troops from passing through. Paying our Respect at the American Cemetery in Normandy

US Paratrooper and Pilot in D-Day Museum German big gun at Gold Beach Memorial at American Cemetary Grave I chose to honor with a rose Monument in the sand at Omaha Beach Light Show on Cathedral in Rouen Light Show on Cathedral in Rouen Today was the somber day of the trip, our visit to the beaches of Normandy and the American cemetery.  Our first stop was the D-Day museum in Arronmanches above Gold Beach.  Here the British successfully built a working harbor in 12 days that provided one of the key supply lines to support the retaking of France and Europe, a major engineering feat.  The picture shows the uniform and equipment of the American paratroopers.  Many died landing in water (off course) unable to cut themselves free from their parachutes while being weighted down with 80+ pounds of equipment.
