Our Morning in Nice

This morning started out with an excellent breakfast buffet in the hotel cafe.  Eggs and bacon, followed by croissants and cheese, and finished off with fresh fruit and fresh squeezed orange use. Yumm.  Then we were off on our bus/walking tour of Nice.

We followed along the coastline to the east to a lookout point where we were able to seem much of the city of Nice and surrounding cities that connect to it.

We passed by many town squares. I loved the street tiles on this one.

We went by a Russian Orthodox church that is reputed to be the most beautiful one of any such church outside of Russia.  Were I return to Nice I might want to schedule time to see the inside and the priceless collection of icons.

We the were at the top of the hill overlooking the city where there is a park filled with olive trees, and this house which has been converted to the Matisse museum.

Alongside museum are the ruins of a roman bath.  They say that this excavation represents about 10 percent of what is in this location, but they choose to landscape over much of it as leaving it buried is the best way to protect it until funds and interest are such to allow further excavation in a responsible way.

Adjoining these grounds was a church and monastery, one that was visited by Pope John Paul the II.

The floors in front of the church are mosaics made out of river stones taken from the Mediterranean coastline (I guess that would make them sea stones, not river stones).  They were also used on the walkways throughout the gardens.

Adjoining the church is a monastery with extensive formal gardens.  Originally these were all vegetable gardens managed by the monks, but were eventually converted to flower gardens.

The views of the city and surrounding areas for more than 240 degrees from the garden are spectacular.

We finished the morning at the farmer's market where they had great choices of produce, seafood, flowers, and gift items.  We found a local sidewalk restaurant where we ordered some olives and they provided a couple large French beers to wash them down with (or maybe it was the other way around).  We found an ice cream stand for watermelon and lemon sorbet, then a bakery for another loaf of bread to finish off the cheese and wine waiting for us in our room.
